The Guillermo and Herlinda Calzada Visual Journalism Scholarship
Rewarding a deserving minority student attending a non-accredited university

The Guillermo and Herlinda Calzada Visual Journalism Scholarship is awarded periodically to a deserving minority photojournalism or informational graphics student attending a university with a non-accredited program.

Many minority students do not have the option of attending an accredited program at a major university. Some national awards are reserved exclusively for students attending universities with accredited journalism programs.

This scholarship is a small step in attempting to recognize and encourage those students with a talent for visual journalism who are not able to compete for collegiate prizes reserved only for students enrolled in accredited university programs.

The Guillermo and Herlinda Calzada Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is administered by the three grown children of Guillermo and Herlinda Calzada of El Paso, Texas, and their daughter-in-law, Alicia Wagner Calzada. They all are newspaper visual journalists in Texas.

If you are interested in winning this scholarship, please send a short essay detailing your hopes for your career, a references sheet and samples of your work. If you wish, you can send this information via email. If you have a website that contains examples of your photographic or informational graphics work, please send the WWW address via email to The deadline is June 1, 2006.
